Liverpool have sent an opening enquiry to Newcastle over England international Anthony Gordon, according to a new report.

Gordon, 23, only joined the Magpies in January 2023 and took his game to the next level last season for Eddie Howe’s side.

He hit 11 goals and 10 assists in 35 Premier League games, proving to be a robust and capable top-flight winger.

Newcastle require a couple of big sales this summer in order to stay compliant with profit and sustainability rules, and to generate funds for their own transfer campaign.

Yankuba Minteh is one player who has been linked with an exit and Everton are thought to be keen while bigger names like Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes have also been touted to depart.

It was reported a couple of months ago that Gordon had emerged onto Liverpool’s radar and new transfer chiefs Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards appear to be eyeing a shakeup in the forward department.

Luis Diaz could join Barcelona if the Catalans can finance the deal while Mohamed Salah is out of contract in 2025.

Gordon hints at Liverpool destiny

Gordon was on the books of Liverpool until he was 11 years old and has made no secret of his Liverpool leanings in recent times.

He has described Salah as the best player in the world, admitted he idolised Steven Gerrard as a kid and said Anfield had the best atmosphere of any ground in the league  - other than his own team’s St. James’ Park.

HITC reports that Liverpool’s recruitment department has identified Gordon as a player who could reach the very top at the club, not too dissimilar to the process which went into signing Salah back in 2017.

Newcastle paid £45 million to sign Gordon from Everton back in January 2023 but have only got him contracted until the summer of 2026. That could well leave the North East side vulnerable to a bid.

The England winger, who is currently with the Three Lions at Euro 2024, is also on the radar of Paris Saint-Germain, the French champions who have a gaping hole on the left side of their attack following the departure of Kylian Mbappe.
