Liverpool are actively exploring defensive reinforcements as uncertainty looms over Virgil van Dijk’s future at Anfield. The Dutch centre-back’s contract expires at the end of the season, and despite ongoing discussions, no agreement has been reached on an extension.
Van Dijk remains integral to Liverpool’s ambitions, but given his age, the club is cautious about committing to a long-term deal. If the 32-year-old departs, Liverpool want to ensure they have a replacement ready to step in.
According to Caught Offside, Arne Slot’s side have added Konstantinos Koulierakis to their shortlist. The 21-year-old Wolfsburg defender has impressed this season, attracting interest from Premier League sides Crystal Palace and Aston Villa, as well as European giants AC Milan and Real Madrid.
Koulierakis has quickly emerged as one of the most sought-after young defenders in Europe. His performances for Wolfsburg since joining from PAOK Saloniki last summer have caught the attention of multiple top clubs.
While Wolfsburg are pleased with his progress, they are reportedly open to offers, with an asking price between €40m and €50m. German publication Bild recently described the Greek international as “one of the most sought-after defensive talents in Europe.”

Koulierakis’ profile fits Liverpool’s recruitment strategy—a young, progressive defender with a strong physical presence. His ability to play out from the back and his positional awareness align with Slot’s high-intensity tactical approach.
Liverpool’s interest in Koulierakis suggests the club are preparing for life after Van Dijk. Whether they will firm up their interest with a formal bid remains to be seen, but they face stiff competition from multiple clubs.
There are concerns over whether Koulierakis is the right calibre of signing to replace a club legend like Van Dijk. While the Greek defender has potential, he remains relatively unproven at the highest level.
Many supporters will question whether Liverpool should be targeting a more experienced, elite-level centre-back rather than gambling on a young prospect. With AC Milan and Real Madrid also showing interest, Koulierakis’ talent is evident, but Liverpool cannot afford to make the wrong defensive signing at such a crucial transition period.
Arne Slot’s arrival brings a shift in style, but defensive solidity remains paramount. If Van Dijk departs, Liverpool must ensure they secure a leader at the back—whether that’s Koulierakis or someone else. For now, the club’s transfer priorities need to be clear, and fans will hope the recruitment team gets this decision right.
