Reds dealt major concerns ahead of Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Newcastle

Liverpool have endured their first major setback under Arne Slot ahead of Sunday’s Carabao Cup final.

While 15 points clear in the Premier League table and surely on course for the title, the Reds will not be adding European success to their list of honours this season.

Liverpool lost on penalties to PSG in the Champions League on Tuesday night after a 1-1 draw on aggregate.

Despite claiming a narrow win out in Paris last week, Ousmane Dembele’s first-half goal at Anfield forced the last-16 tie into extra time and penalties.

Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones missed their spot-kicks as the French champions edged into the quarter-finals after a 4-1 victory on penalties.

The game may have come at a further cost for Slot, too. Indeed, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ibrahima Konate were both forced off with knocks, which is hardly ideal preparation for Sunday’s trip to Wembley given the other defensive injuries in the squad.

With that in mind, here’s a look at the latest Liverpool injuries.

Trent Alexander-Arnold

The England defender appeared to have hurt himself in the second half of the PSG game after attempting to make a challenge near the byline.

He received treatment on the pitch but was eventually replaced by Jarrell Quansah in a major blow for the Merseyside club.

Speaking after the game, Slot confirmed Alexander-Arnold was a doubt for Liverpool ahead of the Carabao Cup final, which perhaps suggests Quansah is in line to start.

“With Trent, he had to come off. That’s never a good sign,” he said.

“And from what I heard from people that saw the images or how he got injured, that didn’t look very good. So I would be surprised if he is available for Sunday.”

Potential return date: Unknown

Ibrahima Konate

There was more concern after Alexander-Arnold went off, too. Konate twice went down in quick succession during extra-time and was duly replaced by Wataru Endo, who played the final few minutes before the shootout.

Still, there is hope Konate will be fit for the Carabao Cup, with Slot suggesting the Frenchman was merely suffering from fatigue.

“I have to ask but for me Ibou [Konate] was more that he was tired than it was an injury,” he said.

Conor Bradley

The news regarding Alexander-Arnold is even more worrying for Liverpool given Conor Bradley’s injury.

Excellent as an understudy during Liverpool’s win over Chelsea in last year’s final and arguably the best back-up right-back the Premier League has to offer, the Northern Ireland international remains on the sidelines.

Forced off against Aston Villa in February, Bradley is expected to miss weeks of action with a muscle injury.

“Conor Bradley isn't ok,” confirmed Slot late last month.

“He is out for a few weeks. It is clear that he went off with a muscle injury and it will take a while before he is back.”

Potential return date: Unknown

Joe Gomez

Liverpool’s defensive options are light as it is, so they will be desperate to ensure Konate makes the Wembley date.

Joe Gomez would usually provide some experienced cover for either the Frenchman or Van Dijk but continues to endure a frustrating time of things on the injury front.

Gomez injured his hamstring during Liverpool's shock FA Cup loss to Plymouth last month and was expected to miss a “number of weeks”.
