Arne Slot could be missing four players for Sunday’s Premier League contest at Anfield

Liverpool have been handed a fresh injury scare with Cody Gakpo rated doubtful for Sunday’s visit of Wolves in the Premier League.

The Dutchman has been a key and regular part of a potent attack that has Arne Slot’s side firmly on course for the title this season, scoring 16 times in 36 appearances across all competitions and starting 16 of the club’s 24 top-flight matches to date.

Gakpo has four goals in his last five outings for Liverpool and started Wednesday night’s chaotic Merseyside derby draw against Everton, though was replaced by Kostas Tsimikas with just over 20 minutes remaining at Goodison Park.

Slot has now confirmed an unspecified knock for his compatriot that could rule him out of the clash with relegation-battling Wolves at Anfield, with Gakpo to be assessed ahead of training on Friday.

"Cody is a bit of a doubt, so let's wait [to see] how he is today,” the Liverpool manager told reporters at his pre-match press conference. “I had to take him off because of an injury, because he got a knock, so let's see how he is today.”

However, Trent Alexander-Arnold will be involved once more against Wolves after returning from a two-game absence with a knee problem to play just under half an hour off the bench against Everton, potentially replacing Conor Bradley at right-back.

Liverpool remain without Joe Gomez, whom reports have suggested could be set for another extended lay-off with a new hamstring injury suffered just 10 minutes into his return in last weekend’s shock FA Cup defeat at Plymouth.

The Reds are also without Tyler Morton due to injury, while fellow midfielder Curtis Jones is suspended against Wolves following an angry bust-up with Abdoulaye Doucoure in the chaotic scenes that followed the Merseyside derby that led to both midfielders being shown red cards.

"We saw Trent of course, being able to play,” said Slot, who is also awaiting news of any potential Football Association (FA) punishment after he and assistant Sipke Hulshoff were also sent off by referee Michael Oliver for their protests after the full-time whistle at Goodison.

“It was the intention to play around half an hour, I think he played somewhere around half an hour, so he will be training with us again. Joe Gomez is out and Tyler Morton is out.”
