Liverpool have emerged as serious contenders for one of Europe’s world-class talents, as German outlet Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger (KSTA) report that the Reds have held direct talks with the representatives of Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz. The 22-year-old attacking midfielder, whose blend of technical brilliance and football intelligence has captivated Bundesliga fans, is now firmly on the radar of top clubs across the continent.
“Wirtz and his family are said to have spoken to at least four top European clubs – including English clubs Manchester City and Liverpool FC,” KSTA reveals, suggesting the Anfield club are among those exploring a summer swoop.
The move, previously thought to be heading inevitably toward Bayern Munich, appears to be far from sealed. The narrative surrounding a Bavarian switch is now “more nuanced”, as per the original report – and for Liverpool, that subtle shift may provide an unexpected window of opportunity.
Liverpool’s position is further strengthened by their ability to meet Leverkusen’s financial demands. While Bundesliga rivals are reportedly being quoted a firm €150 million valuation, there are hints that a slightly reduced figure could apply to foreign suitors. KSTA notes that “in contrast to FC Bayern, these two clubs from the financially strong Premier League are also more likely to be able to pay the transfer fee for Wirtz in the coming transfer window.”

With Wirtz’s contract running until 2027 and no release clause included, Leverkusen have little incentive to accept anything below their valuation. However, the departure of star players in previous windows – most notably Kai Havertz – has shown that drawn-out negotiations often result in late-window deals.
Leverkusen’s sporting director Simon Rolfes is quoted as maintaining “weekly contact with the Wirtz family” and confirms no formal bids have yet been submitted.
Wirtz’s raw output from 2024/25 is exceptional. The German international registered 16 goals and 15 assists in 44 appearances, playing a vital role in Xabi Alonso’s Bundesliga-challenging side.
But it’s his per-90 metrics that truly underline his elite status:
Liverpool’s recruitment team will be particularly drawn to his shot-creating ability and progressive passing – areas that could help replace the void left by Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose move to Real Madrid was confirmed earlier this month.
The similarities between Wirtz’s situation and Kai Havertz’s 2020 transfer to Chelsea are impossible to ignore. Both are Leverkusen academy graduates, both German internationals, and both surrounded by long-running transfer sagas dominated by speculation.
KSTA notes how the Havertz deal “only concluded in September despite much fanfare earlier in the window” – a timeline that could easily be repeated this summer. With UEFA Nations League fixtures looming and Leverkusen aiming to fund their new training complex, the transfer may be delayed until later in the window.
For Liverpool fans basking in the glow of a Premier League title under Arne Slot, this report offers genuine excitement. Florian Wirtz is not just another talented youngster – he is a potential generational star, tailor-made for the next iteration of Liverpool Football Club.
The creative void left by Alexander-Arnold must be addressed smartly, and Wirtz’s profile fits like a glove. He’s a natural in tight spaces, thrives in high-pressing systems, and has the tactical discipline to adapt to Slot’s high-possession, fluid attacking shape. His numbers speak for themselves – he’s not just efficient, he’s elite.
Moreover, this feels like a move with symbolism. The Klopp era saw Liverpool shy away from bidding wars of this scale. But post-title Slot-era Liverpool? It feels different. It feels ambitious. If FSG are willing to back Slot fully, bringing in Wirtz would be a defining statement of intent.
Of course, there’s a long way to go. Bayern remain interested, and Man City never operate far from deals of this magnitude. But this time, Liverpool are in the mix early. And if they can offer Champions League football, a title-winning platform, and a leading role in a team built for the future – there’s every reason to believe Florian Wirtz could be donning red come September.
