Angel Gomes’ (24) injury absence comes at a time when his future at Lille OSC is under considerable scrutiny. The midfielder recently broke into the England set-up, a reward for his consistency at Lille over the past two seasons. However, his contract with LOSC expires at the end of the current campaign.

A mainstay, firstly under Paulo Fonseca and then under Bruno Genesio, Gomes has been suffering an injury for several months, as he confirmed in a post on social media. It is an injury that the former Manchester United man had been playing through but the decision was recently taken to give the player time away from the pitch in order to recover.

Gomes free to discuss pre-contract agreement from January

Gomes will not play until 2025. However, given that his contract expires at the end of the season, and with no signs of talks of a renewal, various reports had attributed Gomes’ absence to his contract situation, rather than his injury. Genesio has refuted those claims.

“[The injury] needed intervention so that he is no longer hampered [by it]. We had to account for a four-week absence so that he could once again be operational. It was preferable that we intervened right away rather than wait and let him play handicapped [by the problem],” said Genesio, directly confronting the suggestion that Gomes’ absence is linked to his expiring contract. The Englishman is free to discuss a pre-contract agreement with another club from the start of January.
