Ligue 1: Morgan Guilavogui and Lens make it two in a row against Brest (3-1)

Morgan Guilavogui and RC Lens secured their second straight victory on Friday night, overcoming Brest 3-1 at the Bollaert-Delelis stadium. The Artésiens took full advantage of the Brest keeper’s sending-off to turn the tide in this third round of Ligue 1.

A strong start for the visitors

Brest stunned the hosts by opening the scoring in the 24th minute through Mama Baldé. The Guinean striker capitalized on a Gradit turnover, combined with Kamory Doumbia, and netted his first goal of the season with a precise strike. This goal, against the run of play, rewarded Eric Roy’s men for their efficiency despite Lens dominating possession.

Les Sang et Or created numerous chances in the first half but struggled to convert against Radoslaw Majecki’s goal. Despite their technical superiority, the hosts headed to the break trailing on the scoreboard.

Turning point

The match turned on its head in the 58th minute. Radoslaw Majecki, the former Monaco shot-stopper, fumbled the ball after a risky challenge on Rayan Fofana inside his area. The referee didn’t hesitate to show a red card and awarded a penalty to the Artésiens.

Florian Thauvin coolly converted from the spot, leveling for Lens and notching his first goal in the red and gold jersey since returning to France. That equalizer electrified Bollaert and reignited hopes for the northern side.

Lens step on the gas and break Brest

Down to ten men, Brest brought on backup keeper Coudert, who pulled off several impressive saves to keep his side in the contest. But his heroics weren’t enough to withstand the relentless Lens pressure. In the 78th minute, Morgan Guilavogui fired his side ahead for good with a clinical left-footed finish that left the Brest stand-in with no chance. The 27-year-old Guinean striker justified his surprise start—having been linked with a move to Southampton—with that decisive strike.

Adrien Thomasson sealed the result in stoppage time, netting Lens’ third after a pinpoint assist from Saud Abdulhamid.
