Relegation-threatened Valencia edged out Real Betis at the weekend to claim their second Liga F win of the season, sparking hopes of mounting a great escape. Meanwhile, Valencia’s local rivals, Levante, recorded back-to-back wins to move out of the relegation zone.
Here, we will round up all the action from matchday 22, including a frustrating outing for Real Madrid.
Second-placed Real Madrid had to settle for a point in Saturday’s home clash with Deportivo La Coruña. Olaya Rodríguez opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 24th minute after Antônia was penalised for a foul in the box. Carla Camacho headed Real Madrid level after the restart before Dépor restored their lead thanks to an Antônia own goal. Las Blancas were given the chance to equalise when the referee pointed to the spot following Lucia Martínez’s clumsy challenge on Linda Caicedo. Olga Carmona stepped up to blast her penalty into the top corner. Real Madrid would have still viewed it as two points dropped despite coming from behind on two occasions.
Basement side Valencia claimed a much-needed victory in their away meeting with Real Betis. Marina Martí scored the decisive goal in the first period, sweeping a left-foot shot past Paula Vizoso to score in back-to-back matches. The visitors stood firm for the remainder of the contest to seal their first win since January 5. They still have significant work to do with nine points separating them from safety. Meanwhile, Betis finished the weekend in the bottom two after suffering their sixth defeat in eight league games.
Athletic suffered a setback in their bid to secure European qualification in their home game against Sevilla. The two sides played out a goalless first half, before Gemma Gili broke the deadlock in the 54th minute. The former Barcelona midfielder headed home from Natalia Padilla’s deep cross to score what proved to be the decisive goal. As a result of the defeat, Athletic are now a point behind third-placed Atlético Madrid.
Barcelona moved closer to retaining their Liga F crown with a successful trip to Tenerife. Alexia Putellas opened the scoring in the 14th minute, guiding a left-foot shot into the far corner. The Catalan giants maintained their slender advantage until Patri Guijarro added a second in the closing stages. The substitute curled a right-foot shot out of Noelia Ramos’s reach to score in back-to-back matches. The league leaders are now seven points clear of Real Madrid with eight games left to play.
Atlético Madrid missed the opportunity to build a bigger gap over Athletic in the top-three race. The hosts fell behind in first-half stoppage time when Carolina Marín drilled the ball past Lola Gallardo at the near post. Espanyol offered Atleti a way back into the contest when Romane Salvador brought down Tatiana Pinto in the box. Fiamma kept her composure from the spot to score her second Liga F goal of the season. Unfortunately for Atleti, they were unable to push on from the equaliser, ensuring they had to settle for a point.
Levante came from behind to clinch three precious points on Sunday. Real Sociedad’s Amaiur Sarriegi scored the only goal of the first half. The 24-year-old intercepted Elene Lete’s kick out to divert the ball into the net. Levante produced a response within 10 minutes of the restart, pulling level through Daniela Arques. The visitors completed the turnaround with 15 minutes left to play. Ivonne Chacón latched onto Ángela Sosa’s neat pass, before slotting home her 10th league goal of the season. The win moved Levante out of the relegation zone, leaving them one point clear of Real Betis.
Madrid CFF had to wait for the 47th minute to find the breakthrough in their home clash against Granada. Emilie Nautnes took the ball around the goalkeeper, before slotting into the empty net to score in back-to-back matches. Allegra Poljak then tapped in from close range to give the hosts a two-goal lead. Granada’s Alexia Fernández pulled a goal back to give her side renewed belief as they entered the closing stages of Sunday’s contest. However, Granada’s hopes of salvaging a point were quashed by Bárbara López’s 88th-minute effort. The 19-year-old drove home a right-foot shot to seal all three points for Madrid.
Levante are now winless in five matches in Liga F after they fell to a narrow defeat in their recent meeting with Eibar. Mireia Masegur scored the game’s decisive goal shortly before halftime. The 22-year-old produced a first-time finish from a deep free-kick, calmly guiding the ball into the bottom corner to find the breakthrough. The hosts stood firm at the opposite end of the pitch to seal consecutive 1-0 victories.
