The fun part of this Club World Cup tournament taking place in the USA in June was always going to be getting to see our new signings really early, and there’s no better example than Liam Delap.
Just a month ago he was playing for Ipswich – now he’s already made two competitive appearances for Chelsea. He will get a third tonight against ES Tunis, leading the line while Nicolas Jackson is suspended.
He spoke to the Chelsea website ahead of the game about how he had adjusted to such a rapid change in his life. According to him, going to a training camp like this is the ideal way to adapt to a new group.

“When settling into any new place, it’s helpful to be with them 24/7 and help me get to know everyone. We have a good core of English boys here, and I’ve spent a lot of time with them. I know a few of them already,” Delap explained.
Of course the most important person for a striker to build a relationship on the pitch with is the creative hub of the team, and in Delap’s case he has a head start on that front too, as he explained.
“Since I was 15, I’ve played with Cole [Palmer] at Manchester City, so I’ve got a good relationship with him. It’s nice to see a familiar face. It helps me settle in better. I’ve also got a good relationship with the manager. I know how he plays and I’ve played in his system before. I know a lot of the players here.”
Palmer’s understanding with Jackson developed really quickly, and was one of the strong points in this team when both were in form. If Delap can get a similar partnership going then we will be in a really strong position.
