Crag Burley has been on ESPN overnight speaking about Chelsea and their biggest signing of the summer so far, Liam Delap.

Comparing the arrival of the Ipswich forward to Liverpool’s massive signing of Florian Wirtz, Burley said that Chelsea appeared to be going nowhere while the Reds continued to build their lead over the rest of the league.

Burley slates Delap signing compared to Wirtz

“When we talk about the elite level teams in England needing to go to the next level, they are all looking for these strikers that are game changers and job savers and I just don’t think Liam Delap is going to be that for Chelsea,” Burley said.

“There is nothing that convinces me they are taking a step forward. Liverpool – you go out and make a statement by signing one of the most creative players in world football. That’s a statement”

Delap doubters don’t agree with Chelsea fans’ perspective

Perhaps it’s just the shiny new signing syndrome, and maybe us Chelsea fans are just deluded. But we really liked what we saw of Delap at Ipswich last season, and we’ve already seen some great flashes in his limited minutes in Blue so far.

Are there bigger names, more established and developed players out there? For sure. But if we accept that Chelsea are sticking to their model, there was no striker out there who represents better value in the right age bracket than Delap.

It’s also unrealistic to expect Chelsea to be able to sign players like Wirtz. They’ve scraped back into the Champions League – they need to show they’re contenders before the very best in the world will be attracted to Stamford Bridge again.

Hopefully these sort of comments just drive Delap on to succeed even more.
