Poulsen, who has experience playing against Real Madrid in the Champions League round of 16, shared some tips for Dortmund on how to handle Carlo Ancelotti’s team.

He emphasised that Dortmund needs to be very efficient in their gameplay. He pointed out that Real Madrid won’t give them many chances to score, so they need to take advantage of any opportunity that comes their way.

He stressed that Dortmund should replicate the tactics they used successfully against Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-final.

“Dortmund has to be, first and foremost, efficient. They may not have many chances. But the key will be not to let Madrid’s quality players have chances,” he was quoted by Mundo Deportivo.

“You have to stop their game-changers. If you see how Dortmund played against Paris, they are absolutely capable of defending well against Real.”

How to stop Vinicius Jr. and Toni Kroos?

Poulsen also highlighted the importance of having a strong defence, particularly against players like Vinicius Jr.

He mentioned that when RB Leipzig played against Real Madrid, Dani Olmo put in a lot of effort on the defensive end.

This suggests that Dortmund should be prepared to work hard defensively to keep Real Madrid’s key players from making significant impacts.

“Dani Olmo, for example, did a lot of defensive work in our games against Real, something that is rarely necessary.

“It has to be done because players like Vinicius Junior have to be defended with double assists in many situations.”

Additionally, Poulsen advised that Dortmund should closely mark Toni Kroos. By keeping Kroos under constant pressure, Dortmund can disrupt Real Madrid’s flow and make it harder for them to control the game.

“The best thing would be to mark Toni Kroos. BVB have to be, so to speak, attentive to Toni.

“The best thing is to constantly cover his right foot so he cannot make his brilliant deep passes,” he said.
