Former Inter Milan owner Massimo Moratti reveals departing club president Steven Zhang is vastly disappointed by his exit.

Departing Nerazzurri owners Suning failed to repay their debt to Oaktree by Monday’s deadline. Their default thus passed over the club’s ownership to the American investment company.

For his part, Zhang tried to rescue the situation by striking a refinancing agreement with PIMCO. However, he couldn’t find a solution in time.

Moratti reveals the Chinese businessman is currently distraught by the outcome.

“Yes, I managed to speak to Steven Zhang. He said he was sorry, very sorry,” said the legendary club president in his interview with Il Corriere della Sera via FcInterNews.

“I had said right from the start that he is a respectable, intelligent, serious lad. While at the club’s helm, he has grown into a true president.

“He invested money in the club and brought trophies. Let’s not forget about his achievements.”

Moratti was coy on what to expect with Oaktree in charge of the club. However, he notes that the Nerazzurri faithful have no other option but placing their trust in the American fund.

“Is Oaktree a problem for Inter? No one can tell at the moment. We perceive a certain security in the managerial chain. We have no other option but to trust them.

“Funds represent a good part of contemporary football.

“The sport requires the disbursement of extraordinary quantities of money. And not all clubs manage to keep up, without taking into account the global issues of recent years, such as the pandemic, and the specific critical issues in China.

“Steven was already very exposed to the banks. In this new corporate framework, we can never predict the future.”
