Leeds United have completed the signing of Slovenia international Jaka Bijol from Serie A side Udinese for a fee understood to be around £15 million. The 26-year-old central defender has agreed a five-year deal and becomes the club’s second addition of the summer, joining German forward Lukas Nmecha at Elland Road.
As Leeds United prepare for their long-awaited return to the Premier League after winning the EFL Championship, the club’s recruitment strategy is starting to take shape. Bijol’s arrival reflects a clear intention to build a squad with top-flight experience and international pedigree.
✍️ 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗝𝗮𝗸𝗮! We are delighted to announce defender Jaka Bijol has joined the club from Udinese–
Bijol arrives in West Yorkshire with a strong reputation, having earned 63 caps for Slovenia and played an influential role at Euro 2024. He featured in all of Slovenia’s matches at the tournament, including their goalless draw against England in the group stage. The team went on to push Portugal to penalties in the round of 16, where their journey eventually ended.
“Bijol was immense at Euro 2024 and showed why he’s so highly regarded across Europe,” said a source close to the deal. His composure in possession and physical presence are expected to add balance and authority to a Leeds back line that has seen changes since their promotion.
Leeds United’s decision to hand Bijol a five-year contract highlights their belief in his ability to contribute immediately while also developing into a key figure over time. The club’s hierarchy have been keen to avoid short-term solutions and instead build a team capable of staying competitive in the Premier League for seasons to come.
The financial package, though officially undisclosed, is understood to be worth £15 million. For a player with extensive international and top-flight experience, many insiders see this as astute business by Leeds in a market where defensive reinforcements come at a premium.
With Bijol and Nmecha already through the door, Leeds United are expected to remain active in the transfer window. The club is targeting players who fit the profile of athletic, technically sound and mentally resilient individuals — qualities essential to navigating the demands of the Premier League.
Bijol’s signing is viewed internally as a significant step forward. Having impressed in Italy and on the international stage, his blend of experience and leadership could prove pivotal as Leeds United aim to consolidate their Premier League status and establish a long-term presence in the top tier.
