Farke has revealed just how devastated Meslier was following his error against the Black Cats.

Leeds United boss Daniel Farke revealed just how devastated Illan Meslier was following his error in their 2-2 draw against Sunderland.

Speaking to the BBC, Farke said the Whites' shot-stopper was "more or less" in tears in the dressing room, with the late mistake costing the visitors two points at the Stadium of Light.

It was the Black Cats who took the lead on Wearside, with teenager Chris Rigg striking again.

That goal came in the ninth minute, but in the 22nd, Joel Piroe equalised for the away side with his perfectly placed header hitting the back of the net.

Junior Firpo made it 2-1 around 10 minutes after the interval and with the score remaining the same going into stoppage time, it looked as though the Whites were going to go level with the Wearside club at the top of the Championship table.

But what looked like a simple catch for Meslier in the 97th minute turned into a disaster for the Frenchman, with the ball escaping his grasp and ending up in the back of the net.

This was great news for the home supporters, who were desperate to see their team secure a point or three from this clash, but a disaster for the Leeds keeper who will be ruing that error for some time.

Leeds are in third place now and after their missed opportunity, they could fall down a few places after today's set of games.

Whilst revealing Meslier's reaction to the Black Cats' equaliser, he also revealed that the error may not have been as bad as it looked on TV.

He said: "After such a situation, you don't need to talk to Illan, he is the saddest person in the dressing room, he's more or less in tears"

"After such a situation, you don't need to speak about it - no-one wants to hear any words.

"Pascal came over and said he had never seen anything like this. He said it bounced and jumped in the other direction because there was a mark on the pitch.

"I can't tell you if that was the case because I wasn't on the pitch, but Pascal was probably in the best position to see. If it was this, it was unbelievably unlucky.

"To lose those points in this way is heartbreaking, is horrendous, is so sad and disappointing for our lads."

Meslier is an excellent keeper who has made some brilliant saves in recent years.

Helping his team to win extra points, it's a shame that his howler has dominated the headlines.

In fairness to him, it does look as though the ball took a different turn when it hit the pitch and that was probably the reason why the error happened.

That moment cost Leeds two points, but there are plenty more up for grabs in the coming months.
