England interim boss Lee Carsley was impressed with Anthony Gordon's performance in the Three Lions' 2-0 victory over the Republic of Ireland on Saturday.

Gordon, who endured a frustrating summer after making just one appearance during England's Euro 2024 campaign in Germany, came close to etching his name onto the scoresheet as his side cruised to victory over Ireland.

The Newcastle United winger was expected to join Liverpool this summer, before the Reds backed away from a deal involving Jarell Quansah. He's made an impressive start to the 2024/25 campaign already - registering one goal and three appearances in the Premier League.

Now, it seems Gordon has impressed on the international stage too, with boss Carsley highlighting his impact in England's opening UEFA Nations League victory.

"On a really dry sticky pitch, it's not ideal for dribblers but I thought Anthony [Gordon] was a real threat," Carsley told reporters after the game. "He's carried on his form from last season and he looks a really dangerous player.

"I thought it was good in parts. You've seen some of the things we've tried to do. The lads have to take a lot of credit, all of the credit. I think we've shown we've got some real talent and we can be really pleased with the clean sheet as well.

"I think you've got to give Ireland credit as well, they are very resilient, they closed the gaps and our space maybe became a bit wider [in the second half]. We found it a little bit more difficult to get through them but at 2-0 we were quite comfortable."

England will return to action on Tuesday when they face Finland at Wembley Stadium.
