Lazio sporting director Angelo Fabiani offered some reassuring words on the future of Marco Baroni, but the Italian media is suggesting three potential replacements.
The 61-year-old tactician started his first campaign at Formello on a brilliant note, with the club achieving fabulous results on all fronts. However, a mid-season decline has cost the Biancocelesti dearly.
They have now been eliminated from the Europa League and the Coppa Italia, and they’re trailing behind Atalanta, Juventus and Bologna in the Top Four race, currently sitting sixth in Serie A standings.
Nevertheless, Fabiani insisted that Thursday’s dramatic UEL elimination isn’t enough to justify the sacking of the former Lecce and Verona manager.
We have had a positive journey. There are regrets, but a match lost on penalties is certainly not a reason that would convince us to change the manager. Now let’s move forward. We must not give up on anything. Let’s think about ahieving our targets.
These are the words of the Lazio official as quoted by Il Messaggero (via Radiosei). The source adds that the hierarchy has postponed this discussion until the end of the season. But in the meantime, the same report reveals three names that have surfaced as potential replacements.
Former Lazio striker Miroslav Klose is reportedly in the running. He currently coaches 2. Bundesliga side FC Nurnberg. Alberto Gilardini is another suggested candidate. The 2006 World Cup winner has been on the shelf since getting sacked by Genoa in November.
Nevertheless, the newspaper identifies current Bologna boss Vincenzo Italiano as the main favourite in case Lazio decide to wield the axe on Baroni’s tenure.
