Wilfried Kanga joined La Gantoise on June 22, marking his return to Belgium after a previous stint with Standard in 2023. In a recent interview, the Ivorian striker revealed just how pivotal Ivan Leko's presence and project were in his decision to sign with Gent.

Three weeks after his arrival at La Gantoise, Wilfried Kanga spoke publicly about the behind-the-scenes details of his transfer. The Ivory Coast international admitted that Ivan Leko's presence on the Gent bench was a decisive factor in his choice. Indeed, Leko and Kanga had already worked together at Standard Liège during the 2023-2024 season. That strong connection tipped the scales.

"I remember when we played against La Gantoise with Standard, it was really tough. They put us under a lot of pressure, and it showed me they were a quality team, but it also let me see the facilities and the pitch. Ivan Leko also told me he was coming here, and that played a huge part in my decision," Wilfried Kanga revealed in his interview.

As a reminder, the 27-year-old arrived at Standard on loan in the summer of 2023, having fallen out of favor at Hertha Berlin. Impressed by his profile, Ivan Leko gave him a chance. The Ivorian seized the opportunity, racking up 12 goals and 3 assists in 36 Pro League appearances.

"He's an excellent coach. But before talking about the coach, I see the man first. He's a wonderful person. He's genuine, says things clearly, never hides. That's the first thing I like about him. He's tough, he demands a lot from everyone, but we're prepared for that. That's why all his teams are so solid," Kanga concluded.
