Ronaldo has been linked with a shock move back to the Bernabeu

Kylian Mbappe has said he and Cristiano Ronaldo “speak frequently”, amid reports the 39-year-old could make a sensational return to the Bernabeu.

The Portugal star refused to rule out a return to Real Madrid in a recent interview when he said his near-decade at the Bernabeu, when he scored 451 times in 438 games, was the “best time” of his career.

It raised the exciting prospect of Ronaldo linking up with Mbappe and Vinicius Junior in what would be one of the biggest transfer moves in history.

Mbappe equalled Ronaldo's record of 33 goals in his debut Real Madrid season when he scored in their 3-2 comeback win over Leganes on Saturday.

The win moved Real Madrid level on points with Barcelona at the top of La Liga and Mbappe produced another dazzling display.

The France captain opened the scoring from penalty spot in the first half before Leganes turned the game on its head. But Jude Bellingham equalised and then Mbappe won it for Real Madrid with a stunning long-range effort.

The winner was his 33rd goal in all competitions since moving to the Bernabeu on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain last summer.

Speaking after the game, Mbappe was asked about Ronaldo and said: “Me and Cristiano Ronaldo speak frequently. He gives me a lot of advice”

“I'm very happy to equal his goals in the first season, we know what he represents for all of us.

“But the really important thing is to win trophies with Real Madrid.”
