Mamelodi Sundowns defender Khuliso Mudau has returned to training ahead of the highly anticipated Betway Premiership clash against rejuvenated Kaizer Chiefs at the FNB Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The right-back had been absent from training since the beginning of pre-season and the 2025/26 Premier Soccer League (PSL) campaign and is yet to feature in any official match, having last played in the FIFA Club World Cup.

This comes as a result of a contractual stand-off with the reigning Betway Premiership champions, who reportedly turned down bids from North Africa as the player attracted massive interest following his exploits at the global showpiece.

While other suitors remain unnamed, Foot Africa previously reported that Libyan giants Al-Ittihad SC added Mudau to their shortlist of potential signings. The Tripoli-based side was willing to pay a hefty fee and offer the player a lucrative contract, but a move never materialized.

As a result of rejected bids, the 30-year-old wanted improved terms on his contact in order to remain at Chloorkop beyond the current season. Mudau’s entourage and Sundowns are in active negotiations over a new contract.

It remains unclear whether talks are advanced between the two parties at this stage, with the player’s initial contract having come to an end at the conclusion of the previous campaign, but Downs swiftly activated the one-year option they retained.

Meanwhile, the Brazilians are understood to be working tirelessly behind the scenes to find common ground with talisman Lucas Ribeiro Costa, who requested to terminate his contract with Sundowns, amid interest in his services.

The reigning PSL Footballer of the season took his matter to the FIFA Football Tribunal in a bid to force his way out of the club. Sundowns subsequently issued a statement clearly stating that they would not block any player’s move, provided their financial demands are met.
