Khadija Shaw announces new number nine shirt for Manchester City
Manchester City striker Khadija Shaw has taken over the team’s number nine shirt after four years with the club.
Khadija, is also affectionately known as ‘Bunny’, because her older brother gave her the nickname at a young age due to her love of carrots.
The City forward netted 12 goals in the WSL last season which was enough for Shaw to share the league golden boot alongside Arsenal’s Alessia Russo.
With 12 goals last season Shaw won the award with the fewest goals required since 2016.
As well as sharing the golden boot in 2024/25, Shaw also won the title outright in the season before with 18 goals in 21 appearances.
In just four years with Manchester City the Jamaican is already in the top 1o WSL scorers of all time.
There is no doubt that the 28-year-old has become one of the most feared strikers in the league since 2021 and the number nine is certainly going to the right player.
Although the odds aren’t out yet for WSL top scorer next season, Shaw is sure to be in the mix yet again and will be one of the favourites to win a third golden boot with Betting sites.
Manchester City’s number nine shirt has a rich history despite just three other players wearing it to date.
Chloe Kelly was the last City player to wear the number nine. The 27-year-old played 113 times for City, scoring 34 goals for the club.
Although she came with high expectations Kelly left City in summer just before the Euros with Arsenal securing a permanent deal for the winger.
German forward Pauline Bremer wore the 9 before Kelly and although she was largely disappointing with the club after breaking her leg in 2017, the current Brighton star was still sensational in her only full season.
Bremer scored 22 goals in as many appearances in 2019 after recovering from the injury.
Former Lioness Toni Duggan was the first star to take City’s number nine and she still remains one of the league’s most prolific strikers.
Duggan scored 34 goals in 75 appearances between 2013 and 2017 before leaving for Barcelona. Duggan is the only number nine in City history to have won the WSL (City’s only title coming in 2016).
