Kevin De Bruyne played in his last Cup final for Manchester City yesterday. He did all he could for his team as they went down 1-nil to Crystal Palace at Wembley. Although it has to be said that De Bruyne wasn’t at his best yesterday. But his effort can’t be faulted, although his execution was off. Speaking after yesterday’s disappointing defeat, De Bruyne spoke about his participation in the FIFA Club World Cup this summer. There’s no point in De Bruyne playing for Manchester City at the tournament. He made that point yesterday, and it is hard to disagree with his statement.

In an interview relayed by Joe Bray for Manchester Evening News, Kevin De Bruyne had an honest take on his participation in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup. He didn’t rule out playing in the United States, but there isn’t much point in him playing in the tournament. De Bruyne is out of contract at the end of this season. When asked about playing at the Club World Cup, De Bruyne said: “I think in a way I have to take care of myself because if I get injured in the Club World Cup, what am I going to do?” Nobody’s going to take care of me at that point. So there’s a big chance probably I won’t play it, but I dunno, maybe yes.”

“The situation doesn’t make any sense, but I think that happens when you push in new tournaments in the middle of this contract situation. But I’m just a player. I don’t make the rules, I can’t do anything about it. So in the end, like I said, I’ll probably have to take care of myself what is a normal decision. We can speak about it but I don’t know.”

Kevin De Bruyne has a point and Manchester City shouldn’t take him to the United States.

Everything Kevin De Bruyne said about the FIFA Club World Cup and his participation in it is right. Given the fact that he’s out of contract this summer there is no sense in De Bruyne playing for Manchester City in the United States. Given how injury prone De Bruyne has been over the past two seasons the risk far outweighs the gain of him playing in the tournament. He needs to prepare for his future and that is away from Manchester City. He will leave the club at the end of this season.

From a Manchester City point of view, perhaps it is best if De Bruyne doesn’t play for them at the FIFA Club World Cup. They need to plan for the future without him. That process can begin in the United States. In all honesty, it probably should begin in June. City won’t have a regular pre season so the process of playing without De Bruyne should begin at the FIFA Club World Cup.

Everything De Bruyne said about his participation at the FIFA Club World Cup is on the money. He has too much to lose by playing at the competition for Manchester City. Perhaps it is best for both parties to part ways at the end of the season. That may be the cold reality of the situation.
