Juventus have set their sights on Leonardo Balerdi to add depth to their defence, but early negotiations with Marseille have encountered resistance, according to Tutto Juve. The 25-year-old Argentine centre-back has emerged as a priority target for the Turin club as they look to reinforce a back line that management views as pivotal for their upcoming campaign.
As discussions have developed, Juventus presented the possibility of including Timothy Weah as a makeweight in the deal. The US international’s versatility has not gone unnoticed—with his ability to operate on either flank considered an attractive component in potential exchanges. Despite this, initial proposals centered around such a swap have failed to win over Marseille, who have so far declined Juventus’s overtures.
Marseille’s stance stems from a reluctance to part with Balerdi unless a more compelling offer emerges. While the French side appreciates Weah’s qualities—especially with manager Roberto De Zerbi reportedly open to new additions—sources indicate that the Ligue 1 club is not persuaded the swap serves their best interests.
Juventus, for their part, continue to explore potential solutions and remain intent on strengthening their defensive options. Club hierarchy considers the back line a top priority in their ongoing squad overhaul, particularly after already moving decisively in the forward positions this window. Balerdi’s profile—left-footed, experienced in a high-pressing system—fits the demands placed by both new coach Igor Tudor and club leadership. However, without a breakthrough in negotiations or a willingness to increase financial terms, progress has slowed.
Parallel to these talks, Juventus’s broader transfer strategy sees them carefully considering each outgoing and incoming deal. While financial prudence shapes their stance, they are under pressure to secure a dependable centre-back with Serie A and European competition in mind. Marseille, meanwhile, are reportedly already assessing potential replacements should Balerdi depart, hinting a transaction could yet materialize if Juventus return to the table with a different proposal.
As things stand, Juventus have not abandoned their pursuit and talks could resume as the transfer window develops. For now, the difference in valuation—and Marseille’s stiff posture—has left the Balerdi deal at an impasse.
