Juventus have intensified their pursuit of Sporting CP captain Morten Hjulmand, with contacts between the two clubs progressing and the player having reportedly approved a move to Turin. This information has been reported by several sources close to both Juventus and Sporting, underlining the Italian club’s determination to reinforce their midfield this summer.
Hjulmand, a Danish midfielder born in 1999, only joined Sporting last year after a spell with Lecce in Serie A. He has rapidly become a central figure at the Portuguese club, earning the captain’s armband and establishing himself as a leader on and off the pitch. Since his arrival, Hjulmand’s technical qualities and leadership have been highlighted, making him a priority target for Juventus head coach Igor Tudor, who is said to view him as an essential addition to his midfield.
Juventus are facing considerable challenges in getting the deal over the line. Sporting CP inserted an €80 million release clause in Hjulmand’s contract, which runs until June 2028. Despite the clause, Juventus are hoping to negotiate a significantly lower transfer fee, aiming for a figure in the €30-40 million range, though sources suggest Sporting might consider offers closer to €50-60 million.
Negotiations are ongoing, with multiple reports indicating Hjulmand has already agreed personal terms with Juventus. The midfielder has made it clear that he prioritizes a move to Serie A and is eager for the opportunity to return to Italy. Juventus, whose midfield rebuild has been a focal point for the new season, view Hjulmand as the kind of versatile, dynamic presence required in the center of the pitch.
Complicating matters for Juventus is Sporting’s current stance. After the recent departure of Viktor Gyökeres, Sporting are not keen to lose another cornerstone of their squad in the same transfer window. Club officials have communicated their preference to keep Hjulmand, unless a bid meets the full release clause or comes very close to it.
Juventus’ financial situation is another key factor. An €80 million outlay would be a stretch for the club, forcing management to explore creative solutions or consider raising funds through player sales. The club is also tracking alternatives in midfield, with André (Fluminense), Yves Bissouma (Tottenham), Florentino (Benfica), and Granit Xhaka (Bayer Leverkusen) reportedly on their shortlist.
The future of Hjulmand at Sporting may also depend on the coaching situation, following the departure of Ruben Amorim. Sporting’s willingness to negotiate could be influenced by their broader plans for the squad and the evolving market dynamics.
As things stand, Juventus’ pursuit of Hjulmand hinges on their ability to bridge the gap between Sporting’s demands and their own budget. The midfielder’s enthusiasm for the move is giving Juventus leverage, but the negotiation process is expected to continue as the transfer window unfolds. Sources remain consistent in stating that while the deal is possible, the outcome will rest on whether Juventus can broker a compromise with Sporting in the weeks to come.
