Jordan Morris is now the all-time goal scoring leader during the MLS era of Seattle Sounders FC, and his latest goal will feel extra sweet given its significance to supporters in the Emerald City.
The Sounders were dominant throughout the second half of their 5-2 victory over LAFC, on a game that fell on a weekend between Concacaf Champions Cup commitments for both sides.
But it was Morris' tally -- the Sounders' third of the night in the 77th minute and the 87th of his Seattle career -- that not only put the Mercer Island, Wash., native alone atop the goal-scoring record books in Seattle, but effectively ended the encounter as a contest.
Morris' goal to make it 3-1 eventually proved the winner in what -- astoundingly -- was Seattle's first home win against the Black-and-Gold since 2020. And it also came during a match in which the Sounders snapped LAFC's scoreless defensive streak at 380 minutes.
Morris caught and passed former teammate Raul Ruidiaz, who is still without a club after seeing his contract expire at the end of the season. And Ruidiaz's injury issues in recent seasons have resulted in Morris being moved from a wide position -- where he spent several seasons for Seattle -- back to the No. 9 role in which he began his career.
The match also injected some much-needed life into a fixture that has disappointed more often than not in recent seasons.
Despite consistently two of the most talented rosters in the Western Conference, this was the first game between these sides to see more than three goals scored in MLS regular season or playoff play since the Sounders' 3-1 win in the first round of the 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs.
