After Nadiem Amiri and Yann Aurel Bisseck, Jonathan Burkardt is the latest player to withdraw from the Germany squad ahead of their UEFA Nations League Final Four games.

According to Kicker, Burkardt suffered a laceration to his heel during training on Sunday which required stitches. The Mainz forward was already a doubt for Wednesday’s game against Portugal after sustaining a toe injury, but it didn’t turn out serious enough to withdraw.

The German national team are currently at their Herzogenaurach headquarters ahead of their match against Portugal for a place in the Nations League final. Despite the withdrawal of Burkardt, it’s unlikely that Julian Nagelsmann will nominate a replacement. This was also the case for Amiri but following Bisseck’s withdrawal, Nagelsmann nominated AS Monaco defender Thilo Kehrer.

Burkardt was the highest scoring German in Europe’s top leagues with 18 goals in 29 league games for Mainz. His performances in the Bundesliga led to his Germany debut in October 2024 under Nagelsmann. In the 76 minutes that Burkardt has played for the national team, the 24-year-old is yet to find the net.
