VfB Stuttgart experienced a rollercoaster ride of emotions after blowing the lead late in a Saturday afternoon Bundesliga loss to Wolfsburg. No one interviewed by Sky Germany had more trouble articulating his feelings than VfB defender Jeff Chabot, who himself was riding about as high as possible after scoring his first Bundesliga goal last weekend.

Just five minutes after Stuttgart sub Nick Woltemade scoring a dream goal to make it 1-0 in the 72nd minute, the Swabians found their lead snatched away by one of their former players. Tiago Tomas scored what was – in the context of Stuttgart’s dominant performance – a highly flattering equaliser.

A controversial handball penalty in the 86th minute then enabled VfL striker Mohamed Amoura to snatch the winner from the spot three minutes from time. Woltemade, Chabot, and VfB sporting director Fabian Wohlgemuth all conveyed their frustration when speaking to Sky Germany.

It’s quite depressing when you compare the efforts of both teams and we end up with zero points,” Wohlgemuth told Sky. “We deserved more than zero points.”

I went nuts as I’ve rarely scored better goals,” Woltemade added. “It’s bitter. We conceded two goals through a loss of possession and an unfortunate handball. I thought we were on our way to winning after I scored.”

It’s not about the penalty,” Chabot said. “We let the game slip out of our hands in ten minutes. We barely allowed them any chances over the entire course of the second half. I can’t explain it.”
