The Seattle Sounders are trying to build a deep and talented roster that can compete across multiple competitions in 2025. In doing that, they are bringing back some amazing veterans in Albert Rusnak as well as Joao Paulo.
First, the club is re-signing Albert Rusnak to a Designated Player contract for 2025 and 2026, with an option for 2027. The 30 year old Slovakian international midfielder is coming off of an amazing 2024 campaign in which he scored 11 goals and had 16 assists across all competitions. Rusnak played in his attacking midfielder position and was the one that pulled all the strings for that attack. Rusnak has 110 career goal contributions between his time at Seattle and Real Salt Lake which is some experience that should be a huge part of this club in the upcoming season.
Outside of Rusnak, the Sounders have also re-signed veteran Joao Paulo. The 33 year old midfielder has been with Seattle since 2020 and has had an impressive run in MLS. Paulo has won a CONCACAF Champions League as well as being named to a MLS Best XI in 2021. Last season, Paulo played roughly 2,000 minutes across all competitions in a new depth piece role.
These two are going to play key roles and obviously also start a ton as the Sounders will be playing in the FIFA Club World Cup, CONCACAF Champions Cup, MLS action, and more.
