Liverpool’s dramatic 2-2 draw with Manchester United at Anfield has left fans and pundits alike questioning whether the Reds can maintain their title push without addressing a glaring issue in their squad. While entertaining for the neutrals, the result has raised serious concerns about defensive frailties that may cost Liverpool dearly if left unchecked.
Heading into the clash, Liverpool had a golden opportunity to widen the gap at the top of the Premier League table after Arsenal’s stumble the night before. The stage was set for a commanding performance, and hopes soared when Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah overturned Lisandro Martinez’s opener.
But Liverpool’s joy was short-lived. A late equaliser from Amad Diallo silenced the home crowd, frustrating fans again. This marked the second consecutive season that Manchester United have snatched points at Anfield, underscoring Liverpool’s ongoing struggles to kill off key matches.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher didn’t hold back in his post-match analysis. Speaking on Sky Sports, he pinpointed the defensive setup — particularly the left-back position — as a weak spot that must be addressed if the Reds are serious about their title ambitions.
“Liverpool need to sign a full-back. I think they need a left-back,” Carragher said. “Trent Alexander-Arnold was poor. He will be much better than that, and Connor Bradley is fantastic.”
Carragher praised Andy Robertson’s contributions but hinted that the Scottish star may be past his peak.
“I just think Andy Robertson, who is an absolute legend, is just hanging on in every game. I don’t think Konstantinos Tsimikas is quite of the standard to come in and replace him.”

Carragher’s comments have fuelled growing calls for Liverpool to dip into the transfer market when the January window opens. Strengthening the left side of defence could be the difference between lifting the Premier League trophy and falling short again.
As Carragher put it: “If Liverpool could get a left-back in January, I think that’d put Liverpool in a strong position to win the league.”
With title rivals strengthening their squads, Liverpool can’t afford to stand still. A new full-back could be the key to unlocking their full potential — and ensuring they don’t miss out on silverware.
