“I’ve never seen anything change so quickly” – Todd Boehly hits back at Chelsea critics

Out of nowhere on a Wednesday night, Todd Boehly has an interview out where he’s speaking at length about Chelsea and the project we’ve got underway.

It’s nice timing – we’ve just played 5 consecutive impressive halves of football for perhaps the first time since he took over as owner of the club, and certainly for the first time since he spoke publically.

The Athletic have some really interesting quotes from the Chelsea co-owner where he gives his latest thoughts on the progress of the project. He was clearly happy about what he had seen, and you can forgive his slightly clunky language in describing it:

“It was so fluid, it was exactly the way we drew it up, when we came out of the back, built up and we moved up the pitch, very organised and the number of shots we had on board. In those two and a half games, you could really start to see what we were working on coming together.

“Even the commentary has changed over the last two and a half games. I’ve never seen anything change so quickly.”

That last part feels very pointed, with Boehly clearly calling out the critics of the project for flip-flopping back to positivity after a few good results. We would urge him not to get too smug too fast – as he knows by now, you’re only ever 90 minutes away from disaster in a league this competitive.

Chelsea celebrate a win at Stamford Bridge.

A response to implicit criticism

It’s not clear if this speaking out is a response to the comments from Mauricio Pochettino recently which basically declared he hadn’t heard much from those upstairs at Chelsea. We wonder if the coach has had a reassuring phone call in the days since?

Either way, it’s always interesting to hear the thoughts of someone in such a powerful position at our club, no matter what you make of him or the way he’s doing business.
