Mauricio Pochettino has insisted a top six finish “isn’t enough” for a club like Chelsea as he prepares for the final game of the season.

It’s been a season of ups and downs for the Blues which has seen them languishing in the bottom half of the table at times, but somewhat of a resurgence means they could finish as high as fifth if results go their way.

Pochettino has been under constant pressure for large parts of the season, but he deserves credit for a turn around which has seen the Blues lose just one of their last 14 Premier League games.

Top six not enough for a club like Chelsea

A point would see Chelsea finish sixth and secure Europa League football which seemed a distant prospect earlier this season,  providing Manchester United don’t win the FA Cup.

The Blues have reached Wembley twice this season and arguably should have won on both occasions, against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup Final, and Manchester City in the FA Cup semi final.

The late season resurgence has given positive signs for the next season and beyond, but Pochettino was keen to stress a top six finish isn’t enough for a club like Chelsea.

Pochettino has overseen a late season resurgence for Chelsea.

“We were talking this morning that it’s not enough”, Pochettino told reporters.

“We’re not going to celebrate that, we are not going to take a picture because we’ve finished in fifth or sixth position because I think it’s not enough for the club, for the fans, the sporting directors, the owners, the players.

“But, because of the circumstances, I think there’s a satisfaction to turn things from negative to positive and finish in a very good way with the general opinion being much more optimistic.

“When we see that, you need to congratulate, of course. but, it’s not enough for a club like Chelsea.”

A win against Bournemouth would see Chelsea record five straight Premier League wins for the first time under the new ownership.

Pochettino is set to sit down with the club’s hierarchy for an end of season review to decide his future, with a final decision yet to be taken on if he will be in charge next season.
