Djordje Petrovic has admitted he wanted to stay in the Premier League but insisted he’s very happy at Strasbourg.
Petrovic signed for the Blues from MLS side New England Revolution in the summer of 2023 in a deal worth £14m.
The 25-year-old had to bide his time and didn’t make his debut for the Blues until December 2023, when he came on as a late substitute for the injured Robert Sanchez.
The Serbia international took his chance and performed well in the absence of Sanchez and very much established himself as the number one over the second half of last season.
Petrovic impressed between the sticks and made 31 appearances in all competitions as the Blues secured a top six finish under Mauricio Pochettino.
Many expected Petrovic to be the number one heading into this season, but Enzo Maresca opted for Sanchez, whilst the Blues also signed Filip Jorgensen from Villarreal.
Petrovic impressed in goal for Chelsea last season.
Petrovic was harshly deemed surplus to requirements at Chelsea for this season and was sent on loan to sister club Strasbourg in Ligue 1.
The Serbian still believes he has a future at Chelsea and he’s been quietly impressing in France, where he’s made 11 appearances and kept two clean sheets with Strasbourg currently struggling in 14th.
Petrovic revealed he wanted to stay in the Premier League, but insisted joining Strasbourg wasn’t a mistake and that he’s very happy there.
“I am very happy here in Strasbourg,” he said as cited on X.com.

“It is true that I wanted to stay in the Premier League. But when I started working with the staff and the players, it went very well straight away. It’s not a mistake in my journey.”
It will be interesting to see what happens with Petrovic next summer with the Blues needing to sell one of him or Sanchez, and it certainly feels like the Serb is good enough to be part of the squad.
