Legendary former Inter Milan captain Beppe Bergomi feels that Marcus Thuram is out of his element playing for France at the Euros.

The 1982 World Cup winner compared Thuram’s performances for Les Bleus with his Inter displays while speaking on Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, via FCInterNews.

Inter striker Thuram has been a regular starter for France at the Euros this summer.

The 26-year-old did not start for Les Bleus in their quarterfinal shootout win over Portugual. Randal Kolo Muani started in his place, and then the Inter player came off the bench.

However, Thuram started throughout the group stage for France.

It has not been the most convincing EURO 2024 from Thuram so far, however.

The Nerazzurri striker has yet to score or assist a goal.

Part of the reason for this would seem to be tactical. Thuram plays a much different role for his club and national sides.

At Inter Thuram plays in a front two. He tends to partner with Lautaro Martinez leading the line for the Nerazzurri.

And the Frenchman seems to have exactly the right profile to play in this role.

Thuram has exactly the kind of versatility to play a role where he sometimes plays right off the defensive line, and sometimes drops deeper or drifts into wide areas.

Bergomi: Marcus Thuram A “Fish Out Of Water” With France

With France, on the other hand, Thuram has not really had the chance to use his technical ability or searing pace to their best extent.

Moreover, while Thuram has looked lethal in front of goal for Inter, he has not had much of a penalty area presence for France.

“Thuram looks out of his element,” Bergomi said of Thuram’s performances at the Euros. “A fish out of water.”

“He’s not a striker who plays with his back to goal.”

Bergomi continued that “He needs to have another forward to move around.”

“And to have the pitch ahead of him. As he had with Inter last season.”

“He’s struggling,” the former Inter captain said. “It’s better to go with a different option.”
