Sunderland are in talks with Chelsea to sign Marc Guiu on loan in what could be a blow to Ipswich Town’s summer transfer plans.

According to the BBC, the 19-year-old has been made available on a temporary basis for the upcoming campaign and the Black Cats are interested in a deal.

Guiu signed for Chelsea last summer from Barcelona, but has yet to break into Enzo Maresca’s first-team plans on a regular basis.

He featured just three times in the Premier League last season, although he played a more significant part in their Conference League success.

Ipswich offered Marc Guiu warning

When asked about Sunderland’s pursuit of Guiu, FLW’s Ipswich fan pundit Adam Wilkin claimed that he’s not too bothered by the prospect of the club missing out on his signature.

However, he’s warned that some added firepower up front will be needed before the market shuts, and that he is slightly concerned with the lack of links to players at the moment.

“I don’t think I would be too disappointed to miss out on Guiu,” Wilkin told Football League World.

“He’s a bit untried and untrusted in terms of match experience.

“He did well in the Conference League last season. He’s clearly a very technically talented player who came through the Barcelona academy.

“But, we’ll have plenty of other options we’ll be looking at, and we’re a club where we only want people that want to be here.

“And it was rumoured very early on that he was holding out for a Premier League move, didn’t want to move to the Championship, thought he was too good for the Championship, which isn’t the best attitude, in my opinion, to have.

“So, I think we only want players who want to be at the club, and it would be good for him if he could get the Premier League move.

“Sunderland are having a very good window so far, I think.

“And again, I don’t think he would’ve been good enough to come in as first choice, he definitely would’ve been rotated with George Hirst, so maybe he was looking for some assurances there around playing time.

“The loan market is tricky.

“It is slightly worrying that we haven’t really gotten any solid links to any strikers at the moment, but I think that’s probably a space where we’ll look for a loan, and the loans will only tend to move later on in the window, if they’re at Premier League clubs.

“A little bit disappointed just because of the lack of options that we have currently but, from the player perspective, not too bothered.”

Ipswich will begin their league campaign on 8 August with a trip to Birmingham City.

Guiu signing won’t make or break Ipswich’s season

Adding Guiu to Kieran McKenna’s side would’ve been a nice bit of business for the club this summer.

The forward certainly has potential, and could be ready for regular minutes at a Championship level.

But it’s unlikely that missing out on him would have a massive impact one way or the other on Ipswich’s campaign given the attacking talent already at their disposal.

Even with Liam Delap already gone, and potentially Omari Hutchinson also heading for the exit, the Tractor Boys have a lot of talent that should help the club fight for promotion this season.
