Simone Inzaghi explains his squad rotation approach as Inter follow their victory over Bayern Munich with a Serie A clash against Cagliari. ‘I tried changes, but not a transformation.’

It kicks off at San Siro at 17.00 UK time (16.00 GMT).

The mood in the Nerazzurri camp was boosted by a remarkable 2-1 victory away to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-final, sealed by Lautaro Martinez and a last-gasp Davide Frattesi strike.

The second leg is on Wednesday at San Siro, but squad rotation has to be kept to a minimum after last week’s 2-2 Serie A draw with Parma.

“I am fortunate to have a group that works hard, tries to always hold the name of Inter high, so we must continue like this to the end of the season,” Inzaghi told DAZN.

“We are coming off an intense match that gave us great satisfaction, but it was only the first round in a Champions League tie, and our focus must be on Cagliari. There are dangers, they are well-organised, and we must be immediately aggressive and determined.”

Mehdi Taremi is back on the bench, but Denzel Dumfries and Piotr Zielinski are still out of action for Inter’s 47th competitive match of the campaign.

“We only had one training session yesterday, I saw the players had recovered pretty well both physically and mentally. Bastoni, Acerbi, Darmian, Mkhitaryan and Thuram had played more than the others recently to cover for injuries, so I tried to make a few changes, but not a transformation. I have faith in everyone,” concluded Inzaghi.

“Every player wants to be on the pitch all the time, but you must also respect human nature.”
