An official statement from Inter is expected to arrive on Wednesday morning, after the deadline for the club’s ownership group, Suning, to repay a €380m loan to US-investment fund Oaktree passed on Tuesday evening.
Oaktree provided Suning with a €275m loan back in 2021, which needed to be repaid in full, plus interest (at 12%) by May 21. The specific timing for the repayment deadline was set at 17.00 BST.
As the deadline has now passed, and Suning have not repaid the loan, Oaktree can now officially begin procedures to assume control of Inter.
It may still take a few days for Oaktree’s acquisition of the club to become official due to the legal complexities involved, however, La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that the club are likely to provide an update on Wednesday.
It has also not yet been officially established whether Oaktree intend to sell Inter on to another buyer, however, recent reports suggest they may have a bidder ready and waiting in the wings.
In the meantime though, it will be the first time in club history that the Nerazzurri have come under US-ownership.
They are set to become the seventh Serie A side whose majority owners are based in the United States, following Atalanta, Fiorentina, Genoa, Milan, Parma (recently promoted from Serie B) and Roma.
