The Champions League is back for the sixth and final matchday, with Inter set to face Real Sociedad at San Siro. The match, which is scheduled for 21:00 CET on Tuesday 12 December, pits together the two Group D sides who have already qualified for the round of 16 and will decide who progresses as group winners. Inter can only finish top with a win.
Inter and Real Sociedad have met three times before: there's been a win apiece and a draw so far. Before this season, the Nerazzurri had met the Spanish side in the first round of the 1979/80 UEFA Cup. Back then, Inter got the better of their opponents over two legs, winning the first match 3-0 in Milano before suffering a 2-0 defeat in the return fixture. In addition to competitive games, the two sides also faced each other in the Trofeo Pirelli in the summer of 2003: Inter won that friendly thanks to a goal from Andy Van der Meyde.

Real Sociedad are heading to San Siro having already qualified for the round of 16 with two games to spare, just like Inter did. The Spanish side have picked up 29 points from 16 games in La Liga (eight wins, five draws and three defeats), a tally which puts them fifth (five points behind fourth-place Barcelona). Imanol Alguacil's men recorded a 3-0 victory away to Villarreal in their last league fixture, with Merino, Zubimendi and Kubo all on the scoresheet. The Japanese man has scored six goals this season, three fewer than Mikel Oyarzabal, Real Sociedad's top scorer.
