Inter had to rely on a stoppage-time goal to defeat Urawa Red Diamonds who had taken an early lead against the Italian side.
After a draw in the first round, Cristian Chivu's team took early control of the game. Dangerous in transition, Urawa looked to hurt the Italians and succeeded early on, after good work by Takuro Kaneko on the right and a finish by Ryoma Watanabe.
Lautaro Martínez headed onto the post shortly afterwards, but it was the only real moment of danger from Inter until the break. There was a lot of play along the flanks and attempts at long balls by Nicolò Barella, but no collective response to the good organization of the opposition.
In the second half, the Urawa Reds began to tire and coach Maciej Skorza was slow to make changes from his bench.
The Champions League runners-up had to wait until the 78th minute for Lautaro Martínez to score from Barella's corner with an improved finish.
With time running out, substitute Valentín Carboni made the difference when he finished on the rebound to give his side all three points ahead of their next game against River Plate while Urawa Reds face Monterrey.
