Inter and Olympique Marseille have agreed to terminate the loan of Valentin Carboni shortly after the end of the January window. The attacker, who tore his ACL in mid-October, will complete his rehab in Milan.
The Argentine transferred to Ligue 1 for €1M plus a €36M purchase option and a €40M buyback clause in favor of the Nerazzurri. However, his spell was cut short by a major knee injury. He played just four times.
Olympique Marseille weren’t going to redeem Carboni and sent him back to Inter. He’s under contract until 2029 with a €3M gross salary, Calcio e Finanza reports. Given the timing of his return, he missed out on making the Champions League list. Serie A has laxer rules, especially when it comes to youngsters, but he’s expected to spend a few more months on the sidelines.
According to Tuttomercatoweb, the Nerazzurri aim for him to be fit for the Club World Cup in June. He starred for Monza for a year before heading to Ligue 1, recording 2 goals and 4 assists in 32 appearances.
It’s a tough blow to lose what could have been a very formative year, but time is on his side. What could have happened had he shined and Olympique Marseille picked up their option will remain a mystery, as it would have been a very healthy ‘plusvalenza.’ Still, the Nerazzurri are in a different era compared to when he left. Technically speaking, he could address their need for speed and creativity up front gratis, but they haven’t taken the time to turn him into a second striker yet.
