Inter Milan defender Matteo Darmian offered his apologies to the Italian public following the Azzurri’s elimination from Euro 2024.

Italy entered the tournament as the reigning champions following their triumph in Euro 2020 three years ago.

However, this proved to be a disappointing appearance for the Italians who scrapped through the group stage in dramatic fashion only to suffer an anti-climactic exit at the hands of Switzerland in the Round of 16.

The Red Crosses had the upper hand from start to finish, with Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer registering a comfortable clean sheet.

The Swiss took the lead through Bologna midfielder Remo Freuler towards the end of the first half. Then they delivered another devastating blow in the shape of a second goal right after the interval.

For his part, Darmian was one of three Nerazzurri players to start for Italy. He filled in for the injured Federico Dimarco at left-back, but was mostly pegged back by his opponents until he left his place on the pitch to Andrea Cambiaso in the final stages.

The 34-year-old expressed his great disappointment after the final whistle.

“At the moment, the disappointment and regret prevail,” said the Inter veteran in his post-match interview with Sky Sport Italia via FcInterNews.

“There was the desire and the possibility to do better but we couldn’t succeed. We have to show our faces and take our responsibilities.

“Now it’s hard to explain what happened. We must apologize to everyone for our shortcomings.

“It’s never pleasant to lose in football. These defeats are hard to swallow. There’s nothing else to add.”

At the age of 34, this could well be Darmian’s last appearance at a major international tournament.
