Inter Milan goalkeeper Yann Sommer has successfully undergone surgery on a thumb injury, and will be out for around a month recovering.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

Earlier this week, Inter Milan confirmed that goalkeeper Yann Sommer has suffered an injury.

The former Bayern Munich hurt his right thumb in training. And medical tests revealed that he had sustained a thumb fracture.

Therefore, yesterday Sommer underwent a surgical procedure to correct the issue.

Naturally, having just gone under the knife Sommer will miss a not inconsiderable amount of time.

Clearly, the 36-year-old will miss today’s Serie A match against Genoa. And he will also be out for Inter’s next few match.

Sommer will not be available for next weekend’s top-of-the-table clash with Napoli.

And the Swiss should also miss both legs of Inter’s Champions League round of sixteen tie against Feyenoord.

According to the Gazzetta, there is a small chance of Sommer being back for Inter’s last match before the March international break. That will be against Atalanta.

But the recovery timeline for the procedure will be right around a month.

That means that summer signing Josep Martinez will have to step up and fill in for Sommer for the first major stretch this season.
