Inter Milan responded to Napoli in the Serie A title race with their win over Empoli, but their performance was far from convincing.

Napoli had piled the pressure on the Nerazzurri with their victory away to Atalanta the previous day.

That was a massive statement from the Partenopei. Against one of the other main contenders for the Serie A title, they won by the odd goal in a five-goal thriller.

Therefore, Napoli have made clear that they have what it takes to push Inter all the way.

With their games in hand, the Nerazzurri even had some catching up to do.

In the first half of yesterday’s match against Empoli, Inter were not at their best.

The Nerazzurri faced a stubborn, organized Empoli defense. And they really struggled to break it down.

Therefore, Inter went in at halftime with the score 0-0.

The nerves were certainly setting in, considering Napoli’s big win the previous day.

But in the second half, the Nerazzurri found a way. It was captain Lautaro Martinez who unlocked the match with a stunning long-range effort.

Goals by Denzel Dumfries and Marcus Thuram – as well as a consolation goal for Empoli from Inter-owned striker Sebastiano Esposito – followed.
