erefore, Legendary former Inter Milan defender Ivan Cordoba feels the criticism that Lautaro Martinez was a “ghost” against Bayer Leverkusen was unfair.
The Colombian defended the Nerazzurri captain. He responded to the poor player captain Martinez received from the Gazzetta dello Sport on social media, via FCInterNews.
Inter captain Martinez came under some fire for his performance against Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday.
The Argentine did not start the Champions League match.
Rather, it was Iranian international Mehdi Taremi who partnered Marcus Thuram in attack for the match.
Martinez, despite being Inter captain, started the match on the bench. Nerazzurri coach Simone Inzaghi decided to give him a rest.
Martinez did come on as a substitute during the second half of Tuesday’s match, however.
Inzaghi gave the 27-year-old the chance to try and impact the match.
However, it was not a particularly effective performance by the Inter captain.
Martinez had his share of the blame as Inter failed to record a shot on target.
The Leverkusen defense, and Jonathan Tah in particular, were able to effectively mark Martinez. The lack of sharpness and physicality that Martinez has struggled with this season was evident.
Therefore, that led Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport to label Martinez a “ghost” in his performance.
However, former Inter and Colombia defender Ivan Cordoba responded with a very scathing comment.
“Give Lautaro the respect he deserves!!” Cordoba wrote in reaction to the “ghost” label. “What short memories you have!”
