Simone Inzaghi feels that Inter Milan did well not to rush things in their Serie A win over Empoli yesterday.
The Nerazzurri coach spoke to InterTV, via FCInterNews, after the 3-0 victory. He also praised young Argentine defender Tomas Palacios after he made his first ever appearance for Inter.
Inter needed to wait a bit to get their win yesterday evening.
And it was a bit of an anxious wait. The match was just about in must-win territory.
Firstly, because of the fact that Inter needed to get back to winning ways after a spectacular 4-4 draw against Juventus over the weekend, a match which saw them squander a two-goal lead.
And then, there is the fact that the Nerazzurri are chasing Napoli at the top of the table.
The Partenopei won their own match in midweek. They cruised to victory over AC Milan by a 2-0 scoreline, a statement result about their title ambitions.
Inter got a boost in the first half when Empoli defender Saba Goglichidze defender saw red for a late tackle on striker Marcus Thuram.
However, the Nerazzurri did not immediately react with an attacking onslaught.
The tempo remained fairly slow until halftime. The score remained 0-0 as the teams went in at the break.
But in the second half, Inter went through the gears.
And eventually, the Nerazzurri broke through. They scored three goals without reply, also rarely looking under much threat in their own half.
Inter coach Inzaghi praised his players. “They did very well,” he said. “They had the right attitude, focused.”
“We knew that this opponent would cause problems for us,” he noted.
Inzaghi said that “We saw the matches they played against Napoli and Juventus.”
“By moving the ball faster we knew we could find the winner,” he said.
As far as what he liked from his team’s performance, the Inter coach said that “The team didn’t rush it.”
“They didn’t get caught up in the urge to score and win.”
“We knew that patience would be necessary,” Inzaghi said. “Serie A matches are all difficult, playing here only Napoli have won and they had to struggle.”
Meanwhile, defender Tomas Palacios came off the bench for his first ever Inter appearance in the second half yesterday.
“I’m happy for him,” said Inzaghi. “He deserves it.”
“He’s been doing very well in training,” the Nerazzurri coach said of Palacios.
