Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi is thinking back on both the positive and negative results against AC Milan ahead of the Supercoppa Italiana final.
Inzaghi gave his thoughts in a press conference ahead of the Supercoppa final, as reported by FCInterNews. He also confirmed that no risks will be taken with the fitness of Marcus Thuram.
Tomorrow evening, Inter face off against AC Milan in the Supercoppa Italiana.
Since taking over as Inter coach, Simone Inzaghi has become very used to derby matches.
In three and a half seasons, the 48-year-old has already been on the bench for twelve matches between the Nerazzurri and their city rivals.
Inter and Milan have met in four different competitions over that period.
The Nerazzurri can look back on positive memories like eliminating the Rossoneri from both the Coppa Italia and the Champions League at the semifinal stage.
Last season, Inter clinched the Serie A title with a victory in the derby. That was the first time either team had done so.
And the Nerazzurri won six straight derby matches under Inzaghi.
On the other hand, however, Inter also look back on Milan’s victory in the derby in 2022. That was a decisive result for the Serie A title.
And this season, Milan decisively ended Inter’s run of wins in the fixture. They won the first league derby of the campaign 2-1.
Inter coach Simone Inzaghi reflected, “The derby is a particular match, and an emotional one.”
The Nerazzurri coach went on, “This is the first trophy to play for this season.”
“And it would be my thirteenth personally.”
“When we think of the derby, we remember wonderful matches like the one on April 22nd, the Supercoppa final, and the Champions League semifinals,” Inzaghi said.
“But also the last one. We deserved to lose in that one.”
“We’ll try not to make the same mistakes again,” the Inter coach insisted.
“They’ve changed coach,” he noted of Milan. “But the players are the same, and they have quality.”
Of the changes to Milan under Sergio Conceicao, Inzaghi noted that “There’s only been one match to analyze so far.”
“But we know Conceicao’s principles,” the Nerazzurri coach said. “His teams play vertically, well-organized, and never give up.”
“Juve seemingly had the match in hand in the semifinal,” Inzaghi said. “But then Milan had a great second half and deservedly reached the final.”
Meanwhile, Inzaghi insisted Lautaro Martinez is a “great captain” despite his lack of goals.
“The other day he played a great match,” he said of Martinez’s performance against Atalanta.
“I was a striker, and I know what it means when you’re not scoring goals. But he appears calm to me, and he’s working well in training.”
“He’s playing well, even if he can’t score at the moment,” Inzaghi said.
And Inzaghi said of striker Marcus Thuram’s fitness that “When we get back, we have six matches in eighteen days.”
“So we won’t take any risks,” he made clear. “But we’ll evaluate him.”
