Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez is slowly regaining his freshness and physicality after a poor start to the season that has seen him in a goal drought.
This is the view in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They note the positive signs as far as the Argentine’s running in recent matches.
There’s no disguising the fact that Inter captain Martinez has had a poor season by his own standards.
The Argentine has five goals in Serie A, and one in the Champions League. This with December well underway.
For a player who has been Inter’s top scorer in each of the past three seasons – and the top scorer for Serie A as a whole last time out – that is nowhere near expectations.
Martinez had a tough start to the campaign. He was clearly struggling with fitness in the first few matches.
Then, Martinez started to look more like his usual self.
However, in the last few weeks the Nerazzurri captain has regressed again. As the Gazzetta note, he has gone forty days now without scoring for Inter.
In the view of the Gazzetta, however, Martinez’s recent goal drought has been a bit misleading.
It’s true that it’s very disappointing for the 27-year-old to still be struggling for goals.
But there have been some notable misses from Martinez. Particularly against Parma.
The biggest worry would be if Martinez was not getting chances.
In the first few weeks of the season, Martinez looked off the pace of matches. He was clearly feeling the effects of a busy and tiring summer and the lack of a proper preseason with Inter.
Therefore, it was hard for Martinez to make an impact in the penalty area.
On the other hand, the Gazzetta argues, Martinez looks a mush fresher and sharper player now.
The Argentine is running more now. Fitness looks to be less of a concern.
And with this sort of intensity in his legs, the Gazzetta anticipate, it won’t be too long before Martinez gets back to scoring goals.
