Inter Miami are reportedly interested in signing Cruz Azul defender Gonzalo Piovi.

According to journalist Cesar Luis Merlo, the two clubs are in advanced negotiations. If the deal is completed, the Argentine would sign a three-year contract with Miami.

The Herons are in urgent need of defensive reinforcements and view Piovi as an ideal option.

Miami already have Noah Allen, Maximiliano Falcon and Gonzalo Lujan in their squad, but they have been unconvincing this season.

Piovi mainly operates as a centre-back, but he is also capable of playing as a left-back.

He played a key role in the Mexican club’s Champions Cup triumph last summer.

Since joining Cruz Azul in 2024, Piovi has made 74 appearances in all competitions, with six assists to his name.

The Argentine is highly rated for his strong tackling, ground duels and positioning on the field.

Piovi would be an excellent acquisition for Miami, who have already signed Rodrigo De Paul from Atletico Madrid earlier this summer.

Miami made headlines around the world by signing football superstar Lionel Messi in 2023.

The World Cup winner also had the opportunity to play in the Saudi Pro League, but he decided Major League Soccer (MLS) was a better career move for him.

The 38-year-old has since bagged 58 goals and 28 assists in 70 appearances across all competitions.

Messi helped his team win the 2023 Leagues Cup, scoring in the final against Nashville SC.

The club secured their Supporters’ Shield in the 2024 season, which qualified them to the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup as hosts.
