Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso, expected to be unveiled as Real Madrid’s new headmaster any day now, has already identified a leading summer transfer target for his Blancos side.

That’s according to Relevo, who point towards Martín Zubimendi as the player in question.

The name of midfielder Zubimendi has of course long been a prominent one in the headlines in Spain and England alike.

This comes after widespread reports surfaced that an agreement is all but in place, for the 26-year-old to make the move to Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal this summer.

Amid a search for reinforcements in the middle of the park for next season, Arteta is said to have identified his fellow countryman as the ideal profile.

Safe to say, then, that the latest upate on the situation to have surfaced this week will no doubt mark a source of concern for those of a Gunners persuasion.

As per a report from Relevo:

‘Among the rumors swirling about Alonso’s arrival at Real Madrid, one name has been repeatedly mentioned in recent days as a potential signing at the Bernabéu. It’s Martín Zubimendi. Alonso coached Zubimendi during his time with Real Madrid’s reserve team and wants him with him at Real Madrid.’

It now remains to be seen if the lure of a potential reunion with Alonso in Spain’s capital is enough to wrestle Zubimendi away from the clutches of Arsenal.
