Juventus could now reportedly be set to make a fresh push to extend Southampton midfielder Carlos Alcaraz's stay at the club.
That's according to a report from Calciomercato, who say that the sacking of manager Max Allegri by the Italian giants may have changed their stance over the Argentinean.
Alcaraz joined Juventus back in the January transfer window, signing on loan for the Italian giants from Southampton until the end of the season.
That deal includes the option to buy, and there has since been plenty of speculation about whether the 21-year-old will remain in Italy beyond the end of this season.
Now it seems as though this saga has taken yet another twist, with the summer transfer window moving ever closer.
Having made that move to Serie A back in January, the midfielder has struggled for game time during his loan spell so far.
In total, he has made just ten appearances across all competitions for Juve, most of which have been as a substitute.
That may have suggested that the club would be reluctant to make the move permanent, although it seems the sacking of Allegri as manager of Juventus on Friday, could have changed things.
According to this latest update, Allegri was not a fan of Alcaraz, with his signing one of the causes of a rift between him and the club's Director of Football, Cristiano Giuntoli.
For his part, Giuntoli is apparently an admirer of Alcaraz, and could therefore now make a fresh move to sign the midfielder from Southampton again.
It is also thought that the 21-year-old would be a good fit for Juventus under Thiago Motta, the Bologna boss who is being touted as their first choice to replace Allegri.
However, Giuntoli will apparently not trigger the apparent €49.5million option to buy that Juve have for Alcaraz, and will instead look to agree another loan deal with Southampton.
As things stand, there are still four years remaining on Alcaraz's contract with Southampton, securing his future at St Mary's until the end of the 2027/28 season, and putting them in a strong position to negotiate.
Having joined the Saints from Argentine side Racing Club back in January 2023, Alcaraz has made 47 appearances in all competitions for the Championship play-off finalists. In that time he has scored eight goals and provided five assists.
It could be argued that agreeing to another loan deal could be the best approach for Southampton to take right now.
Given how little they have actually seen from him, it is understandable that Juventus may not want to rush into paying such a sizeable fee for him.
Alcaraz though, never really seemed to have fully settled in after making the move to St Mary's, so it may not make much sense to keep him at the club for next season.
Another loan move would make sure of that, and leave the door open for a permanent move further down the line.
Indeed, his contract situation means Southampton are well protected, and could still be in a position to demand a decent fee for Alcaraz after another year out on loan elsewhere.
With that in mind, it seems that Allegri's exit from Juventus, may now have opened up a scenario that works well for all parties involved in this particular saga.
