It has been another decent season for Coventry City in the Championship.

The Sky Blues were beaten by Luton Town on penalties in last season's play-off final, and after losing star duo Viktor Gyokeres and Gustavo Hamer in the summer, they made a slow start to the campaign.

Coventry sat as low as 20th in the table in late November, and while they ended up missing out on the play-offs as they finished ninth, they had emerged as top six contenders after an excellent second half of the season.

Coventry also enjoyed an impressive FA Cup run, and they produced a remarkable comeback from 3-0 down against Manchester United in the semi-final at Wembley to take the game to extra time.

The Sky Blues thought they had won the game in the last minute of extra time, but Victor Torp's goal was ruled out for offside, and United went on to win on penalties and progress to the final.

After a disappointing end to the season, Coventry will be looking to bounce back and launch another promotion push next term, and manager Mark Robins is likely to be provided with backing by owner Doug King in the transfer market this summer.

Coventry City fan pundit names most underwhelming players

FLW's Coventry City fan pundit Neil Littlewood says defender Milan van Ewijk and midfielder Kasey Palmer have been the Sky Blues' most underwhelming performers this season.

Van Ewijk made the move from Heerenveen for a fee of €4 million (£3.4 million) in July, and he scored two goals and provided five assists in 49 appearances in all competitions this season, but Neil believes that he could have used his pace more effectively at times.

Palmer scored four goals and registered eight assists in 38 appearances in all competitions this season, but Neil says those numbers are not high enough for a player of his ability.

"For most underwhelming players, there are a couple of candidates," Neil said.

"Although we had a good season and the squad was stretched, I think there's an argument for Milan van Ewijk.

"I'd get slaughtered for this because he's been brilliant, but he came in with this reputation that he's so quick, and he's got a killer ball, and there are a few times he's seen really reserved, like he wouldn't want to beat a man and was reluctant to use his pace, except in defence where he used it every time and got us out of trouble a few times.

"I think he had a good enough season to get away with it, so I think Kasey Palmer is the one. "He has all the ability in the world, and when he's on it, he's on it, and he's a top six Championship player, if not bottom half Premier League. "You can see why he came through at Chelsea, he's got all the ability in the world, but he's injured a bit too much and his decision-making in the final third lets him down. "With O'Hare being out injured at the start of the year and Hamer moving on, we really looked to Palmer to step up and be that catalyst for us, and I don't think he did, which is a shame because he's shown in glimpses how good he can be. "There are rumours that he's out of the door in the summer. I don't know if Robins has run out of patience, but it seems to be a club decision that when players get to the final year of their contract we look to move them on. "I wouldn't be too gutted if he goes. "Don't get me wrong, he scores some crackers, and he scores the odd goal, but I've said quite a few times that he's a cup player. He does well on those big occasions. "I feel bad because he has been a good player, but I don't think his output is what it should be for someone of his ability. I think we should expect more goals and assists out of him. "He's at an age where he should be looking after his body a bit better and his decision-making shouldn't be as bad as it is. "He's still a very good player, and the caveat I need to say to this is we've had a very good season. "Granted, we didn't finish in the play-offs, but we got to the FA Cup semi-final, and I don't think any Coventry fan expected us to do half as well as we have this year with the amount of transition we've gone through.

Coventry City should sanction Kasey Palmer exit this summer

Van Ewijk is a surprise choice by Neil as many feel he has had a good debut season at Coventry, and he will likely improve next term as he continues to adapt to the Championship, but it is difficult to disagree with his views on Palmer.

Palmer has struggled to perform consistently this season, and with Callum O'Hare set to depart this summer, there are big question marks over whether Palmer can step up to replace him.

The 27-year-old was a regular starter this campaign, and he is clearly admired by Robins, but with one year left on his contract, the Sky Blues should consider cashing in on him this summer and searching for an upgrade.
