Mats Hummels spoke about his feelings about his adventure at Roma in an interview with DAZN in the days leading up to the Europa League match against Athletic Club.
The German defender, who arrived in the capital last January, made an initial assessment of his experience, without however committing himself too much on the future.
“I will decide the future later”, declared the former Borussia Dortmund centre-back, leaving the possibility of an extended stay with the Giallorossi up in the air.
“The big difference compared to the previous months I think is the coach. Because I think Ranieri has seen the quality of this team. We have many good players who want the ball, who want to play football. We have a lot of quality when we have the ball.”
“The relationship with Ranieri is excellent, we work a lot. We talk a lot not only about football, but also about other things. He has lived all over the world of football. He knows how players think, how they train.”
“He is convinced of his choices. If he has to win a match he doesn’t look at the name on the shirt, but who trains better.”
“He is good at building a group that gives everything on the pitch. Then obviously every match has a different preparation, but I think the most important thing is that each player knows what to do and knows that each one gives their all for the group.”
“The fans always make the difference, especially when you play at home. The first impact with the Olimpico was special, because they entered 15 minutes after the kick-off. I also came here to live these experiences. But now I have seen all their passion, 5,000 fans away to Empoli.”
“It is quite similar to what happened in Dortmund, where there was a strong passion there too. I love these things. I like to experience matches like against Athletic Club where it is before kick-off, but also in the final minutes there was an incredible atmosphere.”
“Personally, I would like to play against Milan in the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia because we were eliminated. And also because I didn’t play a great game. Maybe my worst 45 minutes of the season, I don’t know what happened. I was coming off some good games, I made some wrong choices. And then obviously I would like to play it again both for the result because we were eliminated but also for how we played.”
“I understand a few words in Italian even though I am not very comfortable speaking it yet. I understand the language, a beautiful language and I want to learn more about it. Rome is beautiful, I love the city. I also like to experience it when I have free time, like going downtown. I like to visit this city a lot. I already liked Rome before I came here because it is a magnificent city.”
“The future will be decided in the future. I am happy with how things are going now. I didn’t play at the beginning but it wasn’t a problem for me because I didn’t expect to play 40 games. Now everything is going well since Ranieri arrived, so we’ll see what happens.”
